Inspiring Women in Transportation Careers
Marcia Ferranto is the President and CEO of WTS International, an association that was founded in 1977 with the mission of attracting, retaining, and advancing female professionals in the transportation industry.
A big part of WTS International’s message is that transportation holds many exciting career opportunities for women, as well as men. A career in transportation can offer financial stability, a healthy work-family balance, and the reward of positively impacting others. Whether working in the field, at an office, or at an academic institution, there are so many different roles to choose from in a transportation-based career - from engineering, to finance, to mathematics, and so much more - that the possibilities are almost endless.
The opportunity for women to make an impact in the world and have a successful career in transportation has never been greater. More women than ever are graduating with their degrees in engineering, and technology is making it easier than ever before to maintain a good balance of career and family. Career opportunities in the field will only continue to grow as the current workforce reaches retirement age and new methods and technologies continue to replace former practices. With the ever-growing need for future transportation professionals, there is no better time for women to fill these positions.
“It is the perfect time to get women’s thoughts, views, and perspectives inside the transportation industry,” Ferranto said, “because now is the time that we’re going to see a lot of transportation infrastructure change, and I think women are going to be a big part of that.”
If you think you might be interested in seeing what a career in transportation has to offer, learning more about WTS International is a great place to start. It offers a number of services that are designed to inform and support women pursuing careers in transportation. One of WTS International’s most recent initiatives is Transportation YOU, a mentoring program for girls between the ages of 13-18 who are interested in STEM studies (science, technology, engineering, or math) and are curious about opportunities in the transportation field. The program connects these aspiring professionals with women who have already achieved success in the transportation industry, and is a great way for young women to network and learn more about the career field, as well as to benefit from positive mentoring relationships.
You can see if Transportation YOU has a chapter in your own city, or find out if WTS International partners with any of the colleges or universities in your area. The organization offers competitive college scholarships to women pursuing transportation-related degrees, as well as opportunities for networking, professional development, and much more.
“Women can find their fit in transportation wherever their strengths lay,” said Ferranto. “Young women today are only limited by their imaginations.”
